For anyone who was paying attention, 2017 was a banner year for cryptocurrencies.

The total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies surged from $17.7 billion at the beginning of the year to $834 billion at its peak in January 2018. This represented a gain of over 4,600% in just 12 months.

Much of this growth was driven by a handful of large-cap cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. These five cryptocurrencies accounted for over 80% of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization at the beginning of 2018.

Since then, the cryptocurrency market has cooled off considerably. The total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies has fallen to $260 billion as of May 2023. This represents a decline of over 68% from its peak in January 2018.

Despite this decline, the five largest cryptocurrencies have all performed well over the past five years. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash have all gained significantly in value since the beginning of 2018.
